Bandipora, July 21: Doctors at the district hospital Bandipora on Monday late evening performed a caesarean surgery on a pregnant lady even as her test results were awaited for COVID-19.
The woman after giving a birth to her child later tested positive for the deadly virus forcing the hospital administration to put the woman, her newborn and the doctors who performed surgery under quarantine while theatre of the hospital was shut for a day as a precautionary measure.
The pregnant woman was in pain and was waiting for the results of her COVID-19 test, however, doctors decided to go ahead with the surgery in a bid to save mother and child.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the pregnant woman, a resident of TA Shah, Bandipora got very sick and was about to give birth with high complications but her Covid test result was still awaited.
“Since the condition of the lady was complex, it was mandatory for us to survive both the lady and her baby. Further, it was decided to proceed for C-section for foetal distress under protective gear. Procedure was purely done in the interest of the patient after following proper SOP’s. Subsequently, the lady delivered a baby without any complicacy,” the official said.
He said that soon after the lady delivered the baby, her COVID-19 result came positive and the situation turned more complex for the doctors but they were not discouraged.
“I couldn’t stand the pain of the pregnant woman as she was about to give birth and we didn’t wait for her COVID-19 result. We treated her during which she gave birth to her child,” Dr. Inam-ul-Haq (Gynaecologist) told KNO
He said that “It was a challenge for us because we had to save two lives. However, COVID-19 test was also necessary for her but she was dying of pain and had to be saved. Finally, by the grace of Almighty we saved them both during her surgery.”
“After her COVID-19 test came positive, we quarantined ourselves as a precaution and we have also put the woman under observation here so that we can take care of her as well. Her condition is stable now,” Dr. Inam said.
Medical Superintendent (MS) district hospital Bandipora, Dr. Bashir Ahmed termed it as success and said that even as the woman’s COVID-19 test result was awaited, which later turned out to be positive after her surgery, the doctors saved two lives without any complication.
“Yes, it is true that coronavirus is a deadly disease and we should take care of it but we had to treat the woman somehow because she was dying of pain. The same pain was not tolerated by the doctors and they treated the woman before the Covid results,” he said.
Dr. Bashir said that the pregnant woman, her new born baby and the team of doctors who performed her surgery were shifted to a quarantine centre for observation and the entire district hospital was sanitized as a precaution.
He said that they have also closed the operation theatre for one day—(KNO)
