Muharram: Scattered processions taken out in Valley

Srinagar, Aug 29: Mourners on Saturday tried to take out processions in various parts of Srinagar city, however, police used tear-smoke shells at most of the places and dispersed them.

Sources told news agency KNT that on the 9th day of Muharram-ul-Haram, Shia mourners took out scattered processions in the interiors of parts of Srinagar city. Police at Shamswari Khankah-i-Moula didn’t allow mourners to surface on main road and kept them confined to the interiors.

Police used tear smoke shells to disperse the mourners at Hamdania Colony area of Bemina Srinagar. Witnesses said that over 100 mourners assembled in the Colony and tried to take out a procession towards Khumani Chowk. Police swung into action and fired tear-smoke shells to disperse them. Witnesses added that many mourners sustained injuries.

A police official said that police exercised restrain and mild force was used to disperse them. He added that those who were part of procession didn’t follow SOP’s.

Scores of mourners also tried to take Alam Sharif procession from the house of Peer Mushtaq Ahmad of Pazwal pora Shalimar towards Imambara Gulshan Ali Shalimar, but at Chinar Chowk Shalimar police dispersed them firing couple of tear canisters.

Majlis-Hussaini Alam Sharief procession was taken out from Delina Baramulla Imam Bara towards grave yard. Hundreds of mourners participated in the procession that culminated peacefully. (KNT)
