Islamabad, Sep 10: The rape of a woman, who stopped on a highway for petrol, in Pakistan has sent shockwaves across the country.

Two men allegedly raped a woman who was stranded on the Lahore-Sialkot highway with her children in Pakistan’s Gujjarpura area on Wednesday.

According to a report in Pakistan news site Geo News, the Gujranwala resident was returning with her children late at night when her car stopped due to lack of petrol.

As the woman waited for her husband to come and pick her up, two armed men attacked her car, smashing its windows and forcing the woman and her children to step out at gunpoint.

They then allegedly raped the woman in a field as her children watched.

What is even more shocking is before the incident, the woman had received a call from her relative who had advised her to reach out to the Pakistan Motorway Police.

When the woman called the emergency number, she was told there was no one to help her.

The accused also robbed the woman of jewellery worth PKR 1 lakh (approx INR 44,000) as well as her ATM cards before fleeing the scene.

The survivor was discovered in shock and with blood-stained clothes by her relatives.

The case has sparked fury across Pakistan, with netizens demanding accountability from the authorities as well as justice for the woman.

So far, the police have reportedly not been able to identify the accused but have taken 12 suspects into custody, national daily Dawn
