O&LPT Union lashes out at UT Admin, says lives of stranded drivers, conductors put at risk

‘No steps being taken for stranded people, many craving for want of medicines’

Jammu, Jan 15: The representatives of Oil and LPG Tankers (O&LPT) Union from Jammu and Kashmir Friday lashed out at the administration for failing to adequate measures to ensure facilities to the stranded truck and tanker drivers along the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which is closed for the traffic from last over ten days.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the representatives said that the lives of drivers, who are stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu highway from past ten days, are at risk due to the closure of the road as they are not getting any facility amid the cold weather conditions in the Valley.

The representatives said that the government has failed to take proper steps in ensuring facilities to the stranded drivers and conductors, thus simultaneously putting their lives at risk.

They said that around ten thousand vehicles are struck along the highway since its closure due to heavy snowfall and subsequent damage of the road in Ramban district.

“Kashmir is under tight grip of cold and our drivers are spending their day and nights in this temperature that too inside the cabins of their vehicles, which are made up of steel,” they said.

They said that most of the stranded drivers are running out of basic needs like water and food while many among them have medical issues and thus are struggling to get medicines.

“There is no provision of fresh water for drivers nor for their food and even hygienic washroom facility is not available for drivers who otherwise are backbone of economy and supply chain,” the representatives of union said while appealing Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally intervene into the matter—(KNO)
