A selfie with a rabbit helps 12-year-old girl to feed her family

Anantnag, Feb 03: Living in extreme poverty, a selfie with a rabbit has come to a rescue for a 12-year-old girl from South Kashmir to earn a livelihood to feed her family.

Mumtaza Jan, a 5th class student belonging to a nomad family in Pahalgam belt of Anantnag has two pet rabbits who help her in earning a little amount in a day to take care of her family.

While talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Mumtaza Jan said that she wants to study and become a doctor but poverty is becoming an obstacle in fulfilling her dream.

“My father, who was a labour, is ill for seven years and is unable to work. The situation has forced me to start earning in order to help my family to bear the expenses besides medicine for my father,” Mumtaza said, adding that, she is elder among six siblings (two brothers and 4 sisters) and has the responsibility to take care of all.

Mumtaza said every morning, she starts roaming around different parks of the Pahalgam in search of tourists who can take selfies with her pet rabbits.

“I get Rs 10 for every picture. I earn around Rs 200 every day, which is very less but enough to meet two ends of our family,” she said.

Mumtaza wants to earn more to continue her studies and give education to her younger siblings besides that she wants to construct a comfortable house for her family.

“It has become part of my life to struggle and earn for my family. I have to take care of my family and struggling in such a young age is not an easy thing,” she said—(KNO)
