Srinagar, Mar 19: Amid hardships, a woman from Khrew area in Pulwama has scripted a success story by setting up a revenue generating unit to sustain her family.

The sheep farm set up with the assistance of the UMEED scheme of J&K Rural Livelihoods Mission is generating livelihood for Imrat Jan (23) of Shaar Shali Khrew and her family which was battling poverty. “I was unable to afford two square meals as there was no earning hand in our family,” Insha told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

In 2018, she learnt about Self Help Groups and joined it with a budget of monthly Rs 100 per month. It was when the government started to pump money into the SHGs and she started the unit.

“With the help of little funds at the initial stage, I purchased a sewing machine. Later, I purchased a cow so as to support my family financially,” Imrat said. “Gradually, I purchased sheep and started and currently own 40 sheep.”

Imrat had to discontinue her studies after class 10 because her family was not able to fund her education.

She suggests women to take benefits of the UMEED scheme and join SHGs in their areas so that they too can become financially self-dependent. Youth should not focus alone on government jobs but should script their own journey by taking help from government schemes like Umeed—(KNO)
