Qazigund, Aug 21: The presence of tall trees along the boundary walls of the Government Degree College (GDC) Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, is posing a risk to the lives of the students and the staff.

A group of students from GDC Qazigund told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the trees, known for their brittle nature, pose a threat, especially during strong winds.

Students said they are constantly worried during attending classes, especially during bad weather conditions. “These trees have grown too tall and could fall at any moment, and we fear for our lives. We hope the authorities take this matter seriously before any unfortunate incident occurs,” they said.

“The tall poplar trees along the boundary wall of GDC Qazigund are a growing concern for the safety of our students and staff,” said one of the officials at the college.

“During strong winds or storms, there is a risk of these trees falling and causing harm. We have raised the issue multiple times, but no concrete action has been taken yet,” the official said, adding that safety should always be a top priority, especially in an educational institution.

“It is unsettling to think that the very place meant for learning and growth could be potentially risky. We urge the authorities to take immediate steps to address this issue before it escalates into a serious accident. The trees need to be cut down as soon as possible to prevent any possible tragedies,” the official added.

Talking to KNO, Principal GDC Qazigund, Prof. Ghulam Hassan Thakur said, “We have already taken up the matter with the administration as well as the tree owners, and hopefully, the trees will be cut down this week.”—(KNO)
