New Delhi, Jan 24: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed hope that the concerns of the Muslim community regarding the Wakaf Amendment Bill will be addressed by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairman.

Speaking to reporters, the Mirwaiz stated that he plans to meet the JPC Chairman to present the concerns and sensitivities surrounding the proposed amendments.

“This is a sensitive issue, and there should be no rush to make decisions. Wakaf is deeply tied to the Muslim community, and any unilateral action would be unfortunate,” he said.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusivity, the Mirwaiz as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust urged the government to involve all relevant stakeholders. “We are open to any positive change, but decisions about Wakaf should be guided by Muslim scholars who can effectively manage and run the institution,” he added.

The Mirwaiz also revealed plans to submit a memorandum to the JPC, outlining the community’s concerns and proposals. He called for the JPC to visit Jammu and Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, to interact with scholars and assess the ground realities surrounding Wakaf properties and related issues.

The Wakaf Amendment Bill has sparked widespread discussion, with many Muslim leaders calling for greater transparency and consultation to ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are protected. [KNT]
