New Delhi, Feb, 12: Jasprit Bumrah who was named in India’s provisional squad, has been ruled out of the 2025 Champions Trophy with a lower back injury, the BCCI revealed on Tuesday (February 11). Harshit Rana has been named Bumrah’s replacement for the eight-team tournament.

Bumrah, who was the star performer in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia, was the captain of the team in the final Test in Sydney but had to leave the field midway on Day 2 due to a back concern and didn’t bowl for the rest of the match. He was initially named in the squad for the third ODI against England (subject to fitness) but the recovery process has extended.

The Indian selectors also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the final squad, with the spinner replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal who was part of the initial squad. Varun impressed in the T20I series against England recently and was also a last-moment inclusion for the subsequent ODIs. With 14 wickets in the five-match T20I series, Varun was the top wicket-taker. He made his ODI debut in the second game against England, finishing with figures of 1-54.

Rana is also a newcomer in the international circuit, having made his debut in November 2024 during the Border-Gavaskar series. He has played two Tests, two ODIs and a T20I till date, and is the first Indian to bag three wickets in each of his Test, T20I and ODI debuts.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal is now one of the non-travelling substitutes along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube, and the three players will travel to Dubai as and when required.

India, who are in Group A, begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. Their next game is against Pakistan on February 23, while they’ll lock horns against New Zealand in their final Group game on March 2, with all three games being played in Dubai.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill (Vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy. (Cricbuzz)
