Jammu, Mar 5: National Conference (NC) legislator from Bijbehara, Bashir Ahmad Veeri, on Wednesday, expressed deep concern over the detention of journalists on flimsy grounds in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Veeri urged Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to ensure journalists are given a sense of belonging and freedom instead of being subjected to unwarranted arrests.
Veeri highlighted a recent incident in Anantnag’s Rani Bagh, where chinar trees were felled, sparking public outrage. He lamented that instead of taking action against those responsible for the illegal act, journalists who reported on the issue were detained at the behest of the district administration.
Calling for an end to such measures, the NC legislator emphasized the critical role of a free press in a democratic society. He urged the Speaker to intervene and ensure that journalists in Jammu and Kashmir can perform their duties without fear of intimidation or arbitrary arrests. (CNS)
