Srinagar, Mar 10: Forests cover 47.8% total geographical area of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the official data accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the total forest cover in J&K stands at 20,194 sq km, with 8,128 sq km in Kashmir and 12,066 sq km in Jammu.

The forests in J&K are categorized based on their density, with 19.42% classified as very dense forests, 38% as moderately dense, and 43% as open forests.

These green zones, which nearly cover half of the Union Territory, act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while preventing soil erosion and maintaining ecological balance, said the J&K government, as per KNO.

It said that policies are being framed and implemented to ensure sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation. “These forests are not only crucial for climate regulation and carbon sequestration but also play a significant role in biodiversity conservation, tourism, and local livelihoods,” the government said, as per KNO.

“To safeguard its rich flora and fauna, Jammu and Kashmir has established a Protected Area Network (PAN) covering 4,861.28 sq km,” it said, adding, “This network includes 4 National Parks, 14 Wildlife Sanctuaries, and 30 Conservation Reserves, which serve as critical habitats for endangered species such as the Hangul (Kashmiri stag), Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, and musk deer,” it said.

“Also, 14 wetlands, including Ramsar sites such as Wular Lake, Hokersar, and Surinsar-Mansar, contribute to groundwater recharge, flood control, and climate resilience. The Nagar Van (Urban Forest) program has gained momentum in Jammu and Kashmir, with 43 urban local bodies (ULBs) managing green spaces under the Forest Department,” the government added.

“In addition, three new Nagar Vans have been completed in 2024-25, while 36 more are currently under development. These urban forests aim to create recreational green spaces for urban populations while contributing to biodiversity conservation,” it said—(KNO)
