Srinagar, July 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC),under its ‘Delhi Chalo’ programme, will hold a protest today at Jantar Mantar, to demand the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The demonstration is being led by the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) under the leadership of J&K Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra.
As part of the party’s ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ campaign, Congress leaders and workers from J&K reached the national capital on Monday.
According to AICC General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the group is on its way to the protest site. “Yes, we are heading to Jantar Mantar ,” he told news agency KINS over phone.
Sources said that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is likely to join the protest at around 12 PM.
This protest follows earlier demonstrations in Srinagar on July 19 and Jammu on July 20, where the Congress raised the same demand.
Speaking to reporters earlier, Ghulam Ahmad Mir accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not keeping his word. “The Prime Minister promised several times — inside and outside Parliament — that statehood would be restored. But even after 10 months since the Lok Sabha elections, nothing has happened,” he said.
Tariq Hameed Karra called the restoration of statehood a “constitutional right” of the people of J&K. “We want to wake up this deaf and blind government. They made promises and are now silent. We are going to Delhi to hold them accountable,” he said.
Karra added that today’s protest is part of a larger movement triggered by a letter sent by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to the Prime Minister, urging immediate restoration of statehood.
“We won’t stop until the promise made to the people of J&K is fulfilled,” Karra said.(KINS)
