“La Niña is still in its active phase, but from January it will weaken. We expect it to go into a weaker phase as the winter progresses,” he noted.

Despite the absence of major snowfall, the Valley is reeling under intense cold conditions as night temperatures have dropped well below the freezing point across many areas.

Srinagar recorded a low of –2.5°C, slipping further from –1.9°C the previous night.Shopian remained the coldest location in the Valley at –5°C.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, registered –2.4°C, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded –3.1°C. Kokernag in south Kashmir reported a minimum of –0.6°C.

Tourist destinations such as Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded –2.2°C and 0°C, respectively.

As the Valley moves deeper into winter, residents are preparing for harsher conditions in the coming weeks. MeT officials have advised the public to stay updated with regular forecasts.

“We are monitoring all systems closely. Any significant change in the weather pattern will be communicated promptly,” Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad added. (KINS)
