Srinagar, Jan 4: The long-pending appointment of the Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has run into official wrangles, triggering uncertainty over the timely declaration of Class 10th, 11th and 12th examination results.
The post of JKBOSE Chairman has remained vacant for over a year after the tenure of the then chairman, Prof Parikshat Singh Manhas, ended. In December 2024, the J&K government reconstituted a Search Committee to recommend a panel of candidates, while the additional charge was assigned to the then Principal Secretary, School Education Department.
However, the process failed to move forward. The officer holding additional charge was later transferred out of Jammu and Kashmir, after which the charge was handed over to another IAS officer who superannuated on December 31, 2025. Meanwhile, the panel recommended by the Search Committee was not processed and eventually lapsed after six months.
Subsequently, the government initiated a fresh exercise at the administrative department level. After several months, the Omar Abdullah-led Cabinet approved the name of a candidate for the post. Despite this, the appointment has been stalled due to what officials describe as “official wrangles”.
A senior official in the School Education Department said the process has been halted at some level due to multiple clearances. “At present, there is no clarity on the appointment of the JKBOSE Chairman,” the official said.
The delay has come at a crucial time when JKBOSE is preparing to declare the results of Class 10th, 11th and 12th examinations. As per existing rules, results can only be notified after approval by the Result Declaration Committee, which is headed by the JKBOSE Chairman.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the government is aware of the urgency and will make alternative arrangements to ensure timely declaration of results. “Results are almost ready and cannot be declared without approval. We will make some arrangement in the coming week,” she said.
Earlier, officials had indicated that the absence of a chairman had left the board effectively headless, affecting the result declaration process.
The annual regular 2025 examinations for Classes 10th to 12th began in November 2025. Official figures show that 94,783 students registered for the Class 10th examination, including 68,804 from Kashmir, 25,224 from winter zones of Jammu, 660 from Kargil and 95 from Leh.
For Class 11th, around 81,622 students registered, while 70,117 students appeared for the Class 12th examination across Jammu and Kashmir.
