Uri, July 25: After receiving several complaints regarding contaminated water supply to the residents here, Public Health Engineering (PHE) department in Uri town have written to flood control department asking them not to approve any permissions for the sand extraction from the local nallahs as it hits the water supply.

Assistant Executive Engineer PHE Uri, Nasir Ahmad Wani said that people in the main town have been complaining about the polluted water supply. “But on inspecting the things on Saturday we found that Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) department was doing some construction work near a local nallah in Nambla village where from we supply the water to the town and that had hit the services,” he said.

He said, “In our letter, we told the concerned department that nobody should be given the permission to extract the sand from the beds of the local nallahs and river Jhelum from where drinking water is supplied to consumers”.

To Saturday’s event, AEE added, “We later sought the help from Uri police and constructional work of PMGSY was stopped as sand and mud was getting mixed with water which could prove hazardous for residents”.
