40 percent seats lying vacant in Govt-run KGBV schools in J&K: Official

Srinagar, Aug 21: In Jammu and Kashmir, nearly forty percent seats are lying vacant in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools—the government-run residential girls’ secondary school that has taken a toll on the functioning of the department.

According to the official figures, there were 39.51 percent vacant seats in the 88 operational KGBV’s.

The official figures available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reads that “39.51 percent (2430 ) seats are lying vacant against 6150 targeted girls enrollment in 88 operational KGBV’s in Type-I and 21 percent seats are lying vacant against 100 targeted girls’ enrollment in 01 operational KGBV Type-IV.”

The KGBV’s are government-run-residential girls’ secondary school for the students belonging from the educationally backward classes and below the poverty line.

Besides, the vacancies in KGBV, the figures further reveal that the Jammu and Kashmir government has failed to complete the construction of more than 60 institutions and construction of some others approved a long back was yet to start.

“UT has not been able to complete construction of 64 KGBV buildings in Type-I and construction of three KGBV’s is yet to start and under Type-IV,” it reads.

The figures further reveal that construction of at least 50 KGBV’s has not been completed and 23 not yet started. “UT is yet to initiate the process of admission under Section 12 (1) (c) of RTE act 2009,” reads the document.

Under the section 12 (1) (c) of the RTE act 2009, all specified category or private schools are supposed to preserve 25 percent of their seats for the admissions of students belonging from Economically Weaker Section (EWS)—(KNO)
