78th Independence Day Celebrated with Great Fervor at GDC Qazigund

Qazigund, Aug 15: Government Degree College (GDC) Qazigund celebrated the 78th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and fervor within the campus. The flag hoisting ceremony was moderated by Prof. Showkat Ahmad Malik (HOD Education), who delivered an inspiring introductory speech that highlighted the significance of independence, nation-building, and the importance of upholding the values of freedom and equality, thereby setting the tone for a day filled with patriotic pride.

This was followed by the hoisting of the national flag by the esteemed Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Gh. Hassan Thakur, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The event was also graced by the presence of the Guests of Honor—Prof. Aufaq Ahmad Zargar (HOD Computer Science) and Mr. Tariq Khurshid Malik (Ex-DSP JKP). After the flag hoisting, the NSS volunteers performed an impressive parade, showcasing discipline and respect for the nation. The highlight of the parade was the salute to the Chief Guest, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Gh. Hassan Thakur, by the NSS volunteers, who presented a precision drill, showcasing their training and coordination. The Chief Guest took the salute, and the audience applauded in appreciation.

The program then transitioned into a cultural segment hosted by Prof. Nehad Kaniz Fatima (HOD English). She eloquently spoke about the importance of remembering the resilience of those who have fought for the idea of freedom and justice throughout history. Thereafter, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Gh. Hassan Thakur, in his Presidential address, meticulously outlined the historical struggle of India’s journey towards independence, emphasizing the sacrifices made and the spirit that continues to drive the nation forward. A special felicitation ceremony took place, where mementoes were presented to the Chief Guest, Guests of Honor, and the Best Teacher award was presented to Prof. Showkat Ahmad Malik (HOD Education) by the Chief Guest, acknowledging his contribution to the upliftment of the institution.

The cultural program continued with the students’ recital of the National Anthem, which filled the atmosphere with a sense of unity and pride. Following this, there were stirring performances of patriotic songs, resonating deeply with the audience. A notable highlight of the cultural segment was a beautifully executed Kashmiri folk dance, Rouf, performed by the students with grace and precision, leaving the audience captivated. A soulful song dedicated to the martyrs moved many to tears, reflecting the deep emotional connection to the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for the country. The cultural showcase concluded with a vibrant dance performance that was met with resounding applause from the audience.

The event also included a felicitation ceremony for the students and NSS volunteers, where they were honored with mementoes and certificates of appreciation by the Chief Guest, dignitaries, and faculty, recognizing their active participation and dedication.

Despite the inclement weather, the program was a resounding success, serving as a poignant reminder of the hard-fought struggle for India’s independence. It was a day that not only celebrated the past but also inspired the present and future generations to cherish and protect the freedom that so many sacrificed their lives for. The event was a testament to the enduring spirit of independence and the unity that binds the nation together.

The program concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks presented by Prof. Rameez Ahmad Shah (HOD Environmental Science).
