Kulgam, Nov 28: Scores of villagers in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district have accused influential individuals of seizing control of the irrigation canal that runs through their villages, including Pamarag, Super, Danow, Bugam, Makinpora, and Qaimoh.
“This grabbing act has choked the canal, leaving it dry and causing widespread suffering in the area,” the villagers said.
Mubarak Ahmad, a local resident, told CNS that the canal is the primary water source for agricultural and horticultural fields during summer. However, due to the influential persons’ grip on the canal, the water supply has dwindled, leaving animals without drinking water and making the area vulnerable to drought-related fires.
The outraged locals said that the department responsible for maintaining the canal is neglecting its duties. They demanded swift action against those involved in grabbing the canal. “If the department takes necessary steps, water will be available in all villages,” they said.
“We rely heavily on irrigation canals to irrigate our fields. With the administration’s inaction, our plight continues,” the villagers said. (CNS)
