Wuhan, Dec, 04: The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in China, caused widespread devastation worldwide. The origins of the virus in Wuhan still shrouded in uncertainty. Now, five years later, China is facing another health crisis. This time, it’s the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a mysterious new virus spreading quickly and causing concerns similar to those seen at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Reports indicate that hospitals in China are overcrowded, and crematoriums are reaching full capacity due to a surge in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Social media is abuzz with concerns about the rapid spread of this virus, with claims that other illnesses like Influenza A, Mycoplasma Pneumonia, and COVID-19 are also circulating, putting immense pressure on China’s healthcare system. Videos online show overwelmed hospitals, and many describe the country being on high alert as it struggles to control the outbreak.

According to NDTV, HMPV causes flu-like symptoms similar to COVID-19. China’s health authorities appear unprepared, grappling with how to respond effectively. Officials are closely monitoring the situation, but many aspects of the outbreak remain unclear.

An account on X (formerly Twitter), named “SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19),” has claimed that several viruses, including HMPV, Influenza A, and Mycoplasma Pneumonia, are spreading simultaneously, leading to overcrowded hospitals and crematoriums. Pediatric hospitals, in particular, are dealing with a rise in pneumonia and “white lung” syndrome cases in children.

A Reuters report said that China’s Disease Control Authority has introduced a new surveillance system to track unknown cases of pneumonia, expecting an increase in respiratory illnesses during winter. This system aims to prepare for unidentified pathogens, a step that was missing during the early days of COVID-19.

As China battles the HMPV outbreak, officials have advised people to wear masks and wash their hands frequently. However, there are growing concerns about whether the Chinese government is being fully transparent, echoing accusations made during the initial COVID-19 crisis.

What is the HMPV Virus?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an RNA virus belonging to the Metapneumovirus genus of the Pneumoviridae family. It was first discovered in 2001 by Dutch researchers while studying samples from children suffering from respiratory infections. Studies have revealed that this virus has existed for at least six decades and has spread globally as a common respiratory pathogen.

What Are the Symptoms of Human Metapneumovirus?
HMPV primarily spreads through droplets released during coughing and sneezing. It can also be transmitted through close contact with infected individuals or exposure to contaminated environments. According to the Chinese CDC website, the incubation period of this virus is three to five days. The immune response triggered by HMPV is weak, making it difficult to prevent recurring infections.

Although HMPV can be found throughout the year, its prevalence is highest during winter and spring.

Who are more vulnerable to the virus?

The soft targets of the Human Metapneumovirus are children and the elderly, similar to COVID-19. Due to the growing spread of the virus, authorities have once again recommended wearing masks. Health officials have advised people to avoid crowded places, wear masks, and frequently sanitize their hands.

Is China hiding something?

According to another Chinese official, Kan Biao, China could face various respiratory diseases during the winter and spring. However, he did not mention whether the total number of cases this year would be lower than last year. Recently detected cases include pathogens like Rhinovirus and Human Metapneumovirus. Cases of Human Metapneumovirus are increasing among people under 14 years of age. Surprisingly, no vaccine has been developed for this virus yet, and its symptoms are similar to a cold or flu.
