Ganderbal, Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel at Sonamarg Ganderbal district on Monday.

In his address following the inauguration of 6.5 km tunnel, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the seven individuals who lost their lives in a militant attack near the tunnel site in Sonamarg in October 2024. He also reassured the public that Kashmir was regaining its “Dharti Ka Swarg” (Heaven on Earth) status, a reference to the region’s historic identity as a prime tourist destination.

PM Modi spoke of the ‘monumental’ changes taking place across the region, with a clear shift from violence to development. He highlighted the substantial infrastructural progress in Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “Today, from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, you can see the growing number of roads, tunnels, and bridges. Jammu and Kashmir is now becoming a hub of tunnels and high-rise buildings.”

The Prime Minister pointed to major projects underway, with more than Rs 42,000 crore being invested in infrastructure development in the region. He emphasized the construction of world-class projects such as the tallest rail bridge, tunnels, and railways, signaling a new era of connectivity and development for Jammu and Kashmir. He also noted that over two crore tourists had visited the region in 2024, a testament to the growing appeal of the area as a tourism destination.

“The Sonamarg Tunnel will make the lives of the people in Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh much easier,” Modi said.

The project began in 2015 when his government took office, and he proudly stated that it was completed under the current administration’s guidance. He further assured the people that Jammu and Kashmir’s railway connectivity would soon be enhanced, mentioning ongoing work on a cable bridge that would significantly boost transportation in the region.

The Prime Minister also underscored the government’s commitment to development, noting that several road and rail connectivity projects were on track to be completed soon.

Additionally, new hospitals, colleges, and other essential infrastructure are being constructed to improve the quality of life for people across the Union Territory.

“The new Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as one of the most connected regions in the country,” Modi stated. He also praised the government’s efforts to address long-standing issues related to connectivity, education, and healthcare. He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing a remarkable transformation, with its tourism industry set to receive a major boost due to the Z-Morh Tunnel’s inauguration.

PM Modi reiterated that his administration’s mantra is to inaugurate all the projects it begins. “Whatever we start, we will also inaugurate. This tunnel will give new wings to tourism in the entire region, including Sonamarg,” he said.

The Prime Minister also took a moment to reflect on the current cultural significance of the day, acknowledging the celebrations of Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Lohri in Punjab, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal across the country. He extended his warm wishes to all those observing these festivals.

Modi recalled his earlier visits to Jammu and Kashmir, where he had worked as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. “I have had a long association with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The warmth of the people here is unmatched, and it has always inspired me,” he shared.

He said that the region is not only improving its infrastructure but also enhancing its educational and healthcare facilities. Over the past decade, several new institutions have been established, including IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, medical colleges, and nursing schools, contributing to the region’s educational growth.

PM Modi also reiterated his government’s pledge to continue working towards the development of Jammu and Kashmir with the vision of making it a prosperous and fully connected region in the coming years.

After the inauguration of the Rs 2,700 crore Z-Morh Tunnel, Prime Minister Modi toured the tunnel and interacted with project officials. He also met the workers who had braved harsh conditions to complete the ambitious project, praising their dedication and hard work.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were also present at the inauguration. [KNT]
