Heatvave conditions in J&K as day temperature rises

Jammu seethes at 40.4 degree Celsius, Sgr at 30.0 degree Celsius; MeT predicts dry weather till May 18

Srinagar, May 15: The maximum temperatures rose in the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir with mercury settling in Srinagar at 30.0 degrees Celsius and 40.4 degrees Celsius in Jammu on Thursday.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a significant rise in the day temperature was witnessed at multiple places in Jammu and Kashmir, with Srinagar, the summer capital of the region, recording a day temperature of 30.0 degrees Celsius.

Jammu was the hottest in the region at 40.4 degrees Celsius, reads data of the local Meteorological department (MeT).

Around 30 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded at three other places, including Batote, Banihal and Bhaderwah, the data reveals. Furthermore, Qazigund recorded a day temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Kokernag at 28.4 degrees Celsius.

Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded 27.9 degrees Celsius while Gulmarg recorded a maximum temperature of 20.0 degrees Celsius. The mercury in Pahalgam settled at 24.5 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, told KNO that generally dry weather conditions are expected till May 18 evening with the possibility of rain, thundershower, gusty winds towards the evening at scattered places on Sunday.

He added that there is a possibility of light rain, thunder and gusty winds at scattered places on May 19, while generally dry weather is expected from May 20 to May 22 in the region.

Moreover, in its advisory, the MeT has said that a significant rise in day temperature is expected during the next three days, mainly in the Jammu division.

The farmers have been advised to continue farm operations till May 18 afternoon—(KNO)
