Kavya S Bhat was 2 when she was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, an eye condition that caused her to lose her vision. But it did not dampen her resolve to complete her higher education.

As per a report in The New Indian Express, Kavya bagged 2 gold medals and 2 cash prizes for scoring the highest marks in MA (Political Science) at the University of Mysore.

Against all odds

Kavya did her schooling in a blind school and graduated from Bengaluru. Her parents Srinivas Bhat and Ravikala Bhat have stood by her.

When she joined the University of Mysore for a PG course in Political Science, many faculty members were against her taking exams on a computer. But she did that in all 4 semesters.

“I wanted to write the exam myself. So I requested a computerised exam for all four-semesters,” she said.

“My father actually wanted me to have a career in the field of music. Though I love music, I wanted to prove myself and wanted to take up the teaching profession which made me choose this,” she added.

“Even we want to be more independent and that makes us find perfection in everything we do. This compulsion is what helped me accomplish this feat,” she went on to say.

She was sad that her father could not be there to see her get the medals as he had passed away recently. But no doubt he is proud of his daughter.

People like Kavya show us that where there is a will, there’s a way.
