Sweeping mudslide blocks Srinagar-Leh road near Kangan

Srinagar, Aug 9: Traffic on Srinagar-Leh road was suspended on Sunday late afternoon after a sweeping mud slide hit Shah Mohalla Kulan area of Central Kashmir’s Kangan town.

The mudslide took place at around 4:30pm of Sunday, after heavy downpour.

Official sources told news agency KNT that due to heavy rainfall, mudslide swept Kangan road damaging some shops and houses.

They said that men and machinery were pressed into service to clear the road. Locals have joined government- men to clear mud and debris from the road.

Landslides are prone to happen in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district – the most recent was last month on 17 July, when several residential houses and shops were damaged after a massive landslide hit Bonibagh area of Kangan.

Meanwhile, cloudburst claimed the lives of two cows in Brazloo Jagir village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. (KNT)
