Srinagar, Sep 17: Three militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces in Srinagar’s Batmaloo area on Thursday morning.
Police said that a woman identified as Kousar Reyaz Sofi was also killed in ‘cross-fire’. The incident sparked clashes as youth pelted stones on forces personnel after the encounter. Forces personnel used tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesting youth.
The Central Reserve Police Force said that besides three militants, a civilian who was on her way to a bakery lost her life in the crossfire.
They said they a cordon and search operation was launched early on Thursday, adding that they seized weapons from the militants.
The authorities said the militants opened fire when the operations team was approaching the house in which they were present.
CRPF Deputy Commandant Rahul Mathur sustained bullet injuries on his chest and abdomen during the firing and was taken to the Army’s base hospital in Srinagar. DGP as per KNT said that the condition of the CRPF officer is critical while another injured constable is stable.
After the death of the civilian, local residents resorted to stone-pelting. An official said that a CRPF man was injured in stone-pelting incident.
Three militants who were killed in the gunfight were identified as Zakir Ahmed Pal of Aloora Imam Sahab Shopian, Ubaid Mushtaq Bhat of Badragund Kulgam and Adil Hussain Bhat of Bhatpora Charsoo Pulwama.
One of the slain militants Adil Hussain was a BUMS student who had joined militant ranks in August last month.
