Srinagar, Oct 27: In a significant development, top officials of security and intelligence agencies Tuesday deliberated on sensitive issues that include security matters, winter strategy and measures to be taken for the smooth conduct of third tier panchayat polls in the J&K UT.

The meeting was held at army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps headquarters and co-chaired by GoC 15 Corps Lieutenant General B S Raju and DGP Dilbag Singh while heads of other security agencies were also present. Sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that officials from the intelligence agencies also participated in the meeting.

“The meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere and sensitive issues that include winter strategy that needs to be adopted to prevent any misadventure by the neighbour (Pakistan). The meeting was briefed that there is a possibility of increase in the attempts of infiltration ahead of the snowfall this season,” a source privy to the meeting said.

He said GoC Raju briefed the meeting that the army had been able to plug the infiltration this year to a large extent as “less than 30 infiltrators managed to sneak in to this side against 126 last year during the same period.” However, sources said that GoC Raju told the meeting that there are inputs that Pakistan may push more and more militants into this side ahead of snowfall and to deal with that, “soldiers are well prepared on the LoC.”

The meeting coincided with the Center’s decision of repealing land laws and allowing people of India to buy land without producing a domicile certificate or any other document. Sources privy to the meeting told KNO that the security top brass also deliberated on the measures to be taken for the smooth conduct of third-tier Panchayat polls—District Development Council(DDC).

Sources said that a draft plan was discussed as to how much security personnel are needed for the DDC elections. “Besides it was decided to keep a close watch on the anti-peace elements and people having potential to disturb the law and order, across Kashmir,” they said. “It was decided that all security agencies will further strengthen the synergy and remain in close coordination while carrying the professional duties.”—(KNO)
