Srinagar, Jan 09: At least two persons in Srinagar have tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus that was first detected in the United Kingdom in September 2020.

Talking to The Kashmir Walla, the resident medical officer at Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial hospital, in Srinagar’s Rainawari, Dr. Bilquees Shah, said, “They are on their way to JLNM hospital, we have not received them so far. But their reports are confirmed. Their families are being isolated. They recently returned from [the] UK.”

Dr. Shah added that the duo was “probably tested in New Delhi as the Valley currently lacks the facility to test the new genome”.

So far, at least ninety persons across India have tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus, the Health Ministry said today.

In Jammu and Kashmir, there has been a significant drop in the number of COVID-19 cases and the deaths due to it. Yesterday, 127 people tested positive for the virus while four more died. Since the outbreak in March 2020, 1,22,303 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,907 have died.

In the UK, the mutant virus has brought the capital, London “at crisis point” and urgent action was required as beds for Covid patients could run out within weeks, said the Mayor, Sadiq Khan. Earlier this week, British PM Boris Johnson announced the strictest restrictions in months to check the spread. He also postponed his visit to India later this month.
