Qazigund, Apr 6: As part of a UT-wide plantation drive launched by Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, Government Degree College (GDC) Qazigund on Monday organised a plantation programme in its campus, with active participation of students and staff.
The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and contribute to a greener and healthier ecosystem. The campaign encouraged participants to take part in tree plantation and understand the importance of sustainable living.

Principal of the college, Prof Sudhir Singh, in his address urged students to play an active role in environmental protection. He said the plantation drive carries a strong message of spreading environmental consciousness and fostering responsibility towards nature. He also announced the formation of an Eco-Club in the college to carry forward such activities.

Faculty members and students from various departments participated in the drive. Among them were Prof Aufaq Ahmed Zargar, Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed Shah, Prof Talib Ahmed, Prof Irshad Ahmed Mantoo, Prof Rameez Ahmed Shah and Prof Nehad Kaniz Fatima.
Various saplings, including fruit trees, conifers, flowering and medicinal plants, were planted across gardens, pathways and open spaces of the campus.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, non-teaching staff and members of civil society. Participants were divided into groups and assigned specific areas to ensure proper coordination.
Over 100 saplings were planted during the drive, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the campus and contributing to environmental sustainability. The event also fostered a sense of responsibility and teamwork among participants, marking a meaningful step towards building an eco-friendly campus.
