Srinagar, May 13: Prominent social worker and environmentalist Adv Farooq Ahmad Ganai, popularly known as the “Kachra Man of Kashmir,” on Wednesday lauded Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for launching a massive anti-drug campaign under the Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir programme.
Ganai said the campaign has significantly changed public perception, with people now openly joining the crusade against drug abuse across Jammu and Kashmir. He also appreciated the Jammu and Kashmir Police for its proactive role in curbing the drug menace at the ground level.
Drawing a parallel between drugs and environmental degradation, Ganai appealed to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration to launch a similar large-scale campaign against the use of polythene and to ensure strict implementation of waste management practices across the Union Territory.
“Drugs and polythene are destroying our society in equal measure. One kills our youth, while the other destroys our land, water bodies and future generations,” he said.
Stressing the importance of waste management, Ganai said source segregation is the only scientific and sustainable solution for proper disposal and recycling of waste. “Without segregation, there is no alternative to making our society clean and green,” he added.
Ganai also expressed hope that mega awareness rallies under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan would be conducted across Jammu and Kashmir with the slogan “Swachhta Hi Seva Hai.”
“A small initiative can bring a big change. Every social movement becomes a people’s movement when led with intent. If we defeated the silence on drugs, we can defeat the indifference towards garbage too,” he added.
