Pahalgam, Jul 13: An initiative titled ‘Pashu Seva’ is providing daily feed to nearly 10,000 horses, mules and other pack animals that ferry Amarnath pilgrims along the arduous pilgrimage route, ensuring their well-being throughout the Yatra.
Shree Pashupati Nath Sewak, a Delhi-based langar organisation, has been providing free fodder, clean drinking water and basic care to animals besides running its traditional 56-bhog community kitchen for pilgrims and service providers during the yatra.
Talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Rajiv Sethi, a representative of the organisation, said around 8,000 to 10,000 animals are being fed daily during the pilgrimage.
“For the last three years, we have been serving near the holy cave. Along with food for devotees, pony handlers and other people associated with the yatra, we also provide free fodder and care for horses, mules and other animals. These animals are an integral part of the pilgrimage and deserve equal care and respect,” he said.
Sethi said nearly 200 volunteers are engaged in the service and continue to work throughout the yatra.
“Everything is being carried out with the blessings of God. From the first day till the conclusion of the yatra, our team remains committed to serving both pilgrims and the animals. We will continue this service in the coming years as well,” he added.
A pony handler said the service has brought major relief to those dependent on the animals for their livelihood.
“There are very few organisations that think about the welfare of these animals. Timely fodder and water keep our ponies healthy and fit for work. It not only reduces our burden but also helps us take better care of them,” he said.
He said that many pony owners travel long distances and cannot always arrange sufficient fodder on their own.
“This service is a blessing for us. Healthy animals mean a safer journey for pilgrims and a better livelihood for our families. We hope such services continue in the years ahead,” the pony handler said—(KNO)
