Srinagar, Oct 29: CPI(M) leader and MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Wednesday urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to immediately take up the matter of shifting Kashmiri detainees lodged in prisons outside the Union Territory, including senior separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, back to local jails in J&K.

Raising the issue during the Assembly session, Tarigami said he had received an urgent call from Shah’s family expressing deep distress over his deteriorating health condition. “I got a call from the family of Shabir Shah, who are extremely worried and said his condition is critical. Others are like him also. I request the government to take an initiative and ensure their lodgment back to J&K prisons,” Tarigami told the House.

He said the separation of Kashmiri detainees from their families for prolonged periods was taking a severe emotional and humanitarian toll. The leader urged the government to approach the Union Home Ministry and seek the transfer of all such detainees so they can be kept closer to their homes and families.

Tarigami also stressed the need for a medical review of prisoners suffering from chronic ailments, calling on the government to ensure humane treatment, timely healthcare, and adherence to established prison guidelines. [KNT]
